Blackened silver has a reputation for being fussy. It isn't. It just hates three specific things, and once you know what they are, keeping a finish looking new is mostly a matter of what you don't do. Here is the routine, minus the myths.
None of it takes more than thirty seconds a day.
The finish doesn't wear off. It gets rubbed, sweated, and sprayed off.
1. Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, lotion, hairspray and deodorant are the fastest way to dull a finish. The rule is simple: jewellery goes on after you are dressed and sprayed, and comes off before you wash your face at night. Give it thirty seconds of nothing touching it and you have solved most of the problem.
2. Sweat is the slow killer
A humid commute, a workout, a long day in the sun — sweat sits in the detailed recesses of oxidised metal and slowly lifts the black. Take pieces off before the gym, and wipe them down with a dry cloth when you get home. That single wipe is the highest-value thirty seconds in the whole routine.
3. Store it dry and separate
Humidity is the enemy of a stored piece. Keep each one in a small zip pouch with an anti-tarnish strip, away from the bathroom. And don't let pieces pile on top of each other in a bowl — the rubbing wears the high points first.
4. Clean it the gentle way
A soft, dry cloth is all an oxidised piece ever needs. Never use a silver polishing cloth or a silver dip — those are built to strip tarnish, and on oxidised jewellery the "tarnish" is the finish. You will polish the black right off.
5. Water is fine, chlorine is not
A splash of water won't hurt. A swimming pool, a hot spring, or a long shower will — chlorine and prolonged wet both eat the finish. Take it off before you get in.
The point
An oxidised finish is durable if you treat it like clothing, not armour. Thirty seconds of the right habits buys you years — and none of it involves special sprays, dips, or a trip to the jeweller.
